What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is the presence of endometrium and endometrial stroma outside the uterine cavity in other areas of the female body, usually in the pelvis.
This disease can affect women from the first menstruation and exceptionally even before the first menstrual cycle in childhood, usually from the time of her first period to menopause, although after age 40 the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity seems slower. .
The disease develops regardless of whether or not you have had pregnancies even if after pregnancies, if present already before pregnancy, it seems to have a more accelerated growth. Its presence is independent of race and socio-economic status. Endometriosis can sometimes persist after menopause or as a result of hormones taken for menopause symptoms (which can cause endometriosis to continue).
At present, the number of women with endometriosis is estimated to be close to 10% of those of reproductive age. But, it is important to note that these are estimates only, and that these statistics can vary widely.
Approximately 30% to 40% of women with endometriosis are sterile, with the disease being one of the top three causes of female infertility. Some women, for example, don’t discover their endometriosis until they have a hard time getting pregnant.
Italian Endometriosis Center
The Italian Endometriosis Center is the first specific center born in Europe for this disease. The Center deals with the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis and facilitates pregnancy with specific protocols for fertilization, all with the most modern technologies.
Italian Endometriosis Foundation
The Italian Endometriosis Foundation was founded in 2007 by the Italian Endometriosis Onlus Association, with the express purpose of implementing research on the disease which currently has around 200 times less funds in the world than other chronic diseases. The Foundation’s goal is to help and support women, disseminate information on endometriosis, follow patients in their care path, help the development of studies and research on the phenomenon.
